Chris Smith’s American documentary television series 100 Foot Wave follows big-wave surfer Garrett McNamara as he journeys to Nazaré, Portugal, in an effort to ride a 100-foot wave. The HBO broadcast began on July 18, 2021. Joseph Lewis approached Smith about helming a feature-length documentary about McNamara. Smith thought it would work better as a docuseries after realizing the original version of the movie was six hours long. A 6-episode documentary series that will be created by Topic Studios and released by HBO was announced in February 2021.
