US removes Xiaomi from its trading blacklist formally
The US has officially eliminated Chines cellphone company Xiaomi from its trading blacklist.
The US District Court for the District of Columbia released a final order on Tuesday that lifted the Department of Defense’s position of Xiaomi as a “Communist Chinese military company” (CCMC).
This rank would have abolished Americans from investing in the Chinese consumer tech company.
A Xiaomi spokesperson said in a statement to The Verge, “The Company is grateful for the trust and support of its global users, partners, employees, and shareholders. The Company reiterates that it is an open, transparent, publicly traded, independently operated, and managed corporation. The Company will continue to provide reliable consumer electronics products and services to users, and to relentlessly build amazing products with honest prices to let everyone in the world enjoy a better life through innovative technology.”
The US had ordered the CCMC position on January 14th, during the final week of the Trump administration.
Xiaomi had sued the US government the next month, and in March emerged victorious in the preliminary injunction halting the designation, with a judge explaining the move as “arbitrary and capricious.”
