NBCUniversal’s streaming platform Peacock attain rights to stream major Olympic events
NBCUniversal announced on Wednesday that its streaming platform Peacock has attained rights to stream some of the Tokyo Olympics’ most anticipated events, such as U.S Men’s Basketball and Gymnastics.
NBCUniversal has paid $7.65 billion to continue its U.S. broadcast rights for the Olympics through 2032. The games serve as an opportunity for the media company to attract advertisers and promote its streaming platform.
The platform will air the live coverage of some popular sports like track, and field events featuring superstars for free. However, the U.S. Men’s basketball will require a premium subscription.
Grabbing the rights to Olympic streaming is a medium for Peacock to compete with major players like Netflix and Walt Disney Co’s Disney+.
The platform has also roped in Comedian Kevin Hart and Rapper Snoop Dogg for a commentary series on the highlights of the games.
The Olympic Games which start on July 23 are being held in the face of a huge backlash from Japanese citizens who are still reeling from the effects of the pandemic.
