‘The Queen’s Gambit’ to be turned into a stage musical
Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit is a story of a chess prodigy and which turned out to be a megahit last year. However, now it’s said that the show may be turned into a stage musical!
Looking Forward has reportedly acquired the theatrical stage rights to Walter Travis’ novel, “The Queen’s Gambit”, on which the show is based.
The Queen’s Gambit revolves around Beth Harmon, an orphan who discovers her extraordinary ability to be able to dominate a game of chess effortlessly. The novel was published in 1983 and was primarily focused on her journey from Kentucky to Paris and then to Moscow, all the while battling addiction and prejudices in a male-dominated world.
“It is a privilege for Level Forward to lead the charge of bringing The Queen’s Gambit to the stage through the beloved and enduring craft of musical theater,” said Level Forward, CEO Adrienne Becker and Producer Julia Dunetz.
They further added, “Told through a brave and fresh point of view, audiences are already sharing in the friendship and fortitude of the story’s inspiring women who energize and sustain Beth Harmon’s journey and ultimate triumph. The story is a siren call amidst our contemporary struggles for gender and racial equity, and we’re looking forward to moving the project forward.”
The deal had been brokered on behalf of the Travis Family Trust by Susan Schulman of the Susan Schulman Literary Agency, New York. On behalf of Level Forward, Rachel Gould arranged the deal.
Level Forward is yet to announce any crucial creative talent with regards to the planned musical of The Queen’s Gambit.
