A teenager who “stands for the oppressed, and the forgotten” is to become the first LGBTQ+ character to take on the mantle of Captain America in the comic’s 80-year history. He’s named Aaron Fischer, or “the Captain America of the Railways” and Marvel Comics is proud to honor Pride Month with the rise of this new LGBTQ+ hero
Marvel Comics is celebrating the 80th anniversary of the US hero with the launch of a new limited series, The United States of Captain America, wherein fans will witness Steve Rogers teaming up with former Captain Americas when his shield goes missing. Rogers teams up with Captain Americas of the past, Bucky Barnes, Sam Wilson, and John Walker on a road trip across America to find the shield. Throughout the group’s journey, they’ll discover everyday people from all walks of life who’ve taken up the mantle of Captain America to defend their communities.
The series is written by Christopher Cantwell with art by Dale Eaglesham and will be released in June. The character was illustrated by transgender artist Jan Bazaldua, who said; “As a transgender person, I am happy to be able to present an openly gay person who admires Captain America and fights against evil to help those who are almost invisible to society”. Writer Joshua Trujillo, excited about this new development, said: “Aaron is inspired by heroes of the queer community: activists, leaders and everyday folks pushing for a better life. He stands for the oppressed and the forgotten. I hope his debut story resonates with readers and helps inspire the next generation of heroes.”
While it is known that Marvel reportedly had a “No Gays in the Marvel Universe” policy in the 1980s, under the editor-in-chief Jim Shooter, it is amazing to see the efforts being put in to reverse the dictums of the past as per the evolution of societies and identities and diversify the MCU.
