Blue Ivy Carter wins her first Grammy, becomes the second youngest artist to win the award
The daughter of Beyoncé and Jay-Z, Blue Ivy Carter, won her first Grammy on Sunday for Best Music Video for “Brown Skin Girl.” She received a writing credit for the song.
Blue Ivy would have been the youngest to win a Grammy, but that record is held by Leah Peasall, who won in 2001 at the age of 8.
Her song, “Brown Skin Girl” is featured on Beyoncé’s “Lion King: The Gift” album. The video, which was launched last summer, stars Lupita Nyong’o, Kelly Rowland, and other famous faces as they sing about Black female empowerment. It also features Saint Jhn and Wizkid.

While the daughter set a record, we all know about the history made by the mother that evening. Beyoncé became the most decorated female Grammys winner with 28 wins and also was the most nominated artist of the night, for nine categories.
About the song, in a brief statement to Good Morning America Beyoncé had shared, “It was so important to me in ‘Brown Skin Girl’ that we represented all different shades of brown. We wanted every character to be shot in a regal light … It was important that we are all in this together and we’re all celebrating each other.”
It is certainly nice to see songs that revolving around feminism, racial inclusivity, and empowerment receive this kind of recognition. Apart from the great music that it offers its fans, it also starts much-required conversations about issues that plague society today and the association of names such as that of Beyonce only makes it easier to disseminate awareness.
