Ellen DeGeneres’ most famous controversies over the years

Ellen is one of the most loved TV celebrities in Hollywood. Her show is tuned into every day by millions of people. People love her for her humor and the style of her conversations with her guests.

A couple of decades after starting her career, DeGeneres became part of a 1990s sitcom, Ellen. The show was a success. However, the downfall of the show came when DeGeneres came out as a lesbian in the show, and in real life. At the time, same-sex marriage wasn’t legal and the show faced a lot of backlashes. Finally, the network canceled the show in 1998.

DeGeneres again came into the limelight with her talk show in 2003.

While she is immensely loved, she has definitely been part of her share of controversies. Here are some of Ellen’s most controversial moments.

Coming out as part of the LGBTQIA+ Community

After coming out in 1997, ABC started putting parental advisory on all episodes of Ellen. Some members of the LGBTQIA+ community said that the show had become too much about gay rights after the star came out. The show finally got canceled a year later.

Being mean to her guests and staff

DeGeneres became a trending topic on Twitter in March 2020 after comedian Kevin T. Porter started a thread in which he asked people to tell stories of Ellen being mean to them. A lot of her staff and guests accused her of being mean, cold, and distant.

Saying Quarantine is like Jail

Again a part of a controversy in April 2020, DeGeneres this time came under fire when she compared quarantine to jail. She faced a lot of hate on social media as people accused her of being insensitive towards inmates, who are living in overcrowded prisons and, hence, are more susceptible to the virus.
