Europe’s top telecom officials demand overhaul of Europe’s regulatory framework

Top Telecom officials demanded a complete overhaul of Europe’s regulatory framework at the Mobile World Congress on Monday. They insisted on a unified oversight of the 27 nation bloc.

The demands came as a result of telecom operators eyeing to tap on the growth potential that 5G networks, new businesses, and next-generation technology can provide. Billions in funding are required to fund the building of 5G.

According to the GSMA, the telecom industry will be investing around $900 billion by 2025 and 80% of that will be in 5G.

A connectivity plan has been laid out by the European Commission which plans to cover all European households with the Gigabit network and all populous areas with 5G.

Executives at the Mobile World Conference pushed for more government cooperation to fulfil Europe’s ambitious 5G plan.

Telefonica CEO Jose-Maria Alvarez-Pallete had opened the keynote session by saying “The European regulatory framework is totally outdated. Regulation today is based on the networks of the previous century.”
