George Floyd killing: Federal criminal charges filed against Derek Chauvin

Accusing the former police officer, Derek Chauvin of using exceeding force and violating the civil rights of George Floyd, the Justice Department filed federal criminal charges against the police officer.

Floyd died last year after Chauvin pressed on his neck after pinning him down for more than nine minutes on the pavement outside a convenience store in Minneapolis.

Three other former officers who were present on the scene that day, Thomas Lane, J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao, were charged federally in relation to Floyd’s killing.

Kueng and Thao, two of the men, are accused of failing to interfere to stop Chauvin while he carried on the gruesome act. All the three former officers are charged of failing to give medical care with ‘deliberate indifference’ to Floyd’s suffering. All the three of them are now preparing for a state trial scheduled in August.

Chauvin, the main accused in the Floyd killing, is also charged of a separate federal allegation related to a 2017 incident, in which he allegedly used a neck control ‘without legal justification’ on a 14-year-old and hit the teenager in the head with a flashlight.

To construct the case, Federal civil rights prosecutors from Washington have worked joining hands with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Minnesota.
