Google gets official thumbs up to build megacampus in San Jose
Google LLC considered one of the five Big Tech companies along with Amazon, Facebook, Apple, and Microsoft got the all-clear on Tuesday night to build a sprawling multi-million dollar mega campus in downtown San Jose, California. The 80-acre mixed-use campus Downtown West project could take more than 10 years to complete.
Sam Liccardo, mayor of San Jose tweeted earlier today about the Council’s unanimous decision describing it as ‘historic’ and one of the biggest private sector investments in the city’s history that could significantly boost its economic growth, infrastructure and development.

According to the project’s website the construction involving 7.3 million square feet of office space for 20,000 workers, 4,000 housing units,15 acres of green space, parks, and plazas, as well as 500,000 square feet of ‘retail, arts, culture, education’ could start as early as 2023. A quarter of the housing units would be under the category of affordable. Google is also putting forth a $200 million fund focused on social equity.
