Here’s who took Oscars home at the 93rd Academy Awards
Being held amidst a deadly global pandemic, the 93rd edition of the Academy Awards is a historical moment in history. Always bickered for its lack of inclusion of diversity, this is the first time a production team with exclusively Blacks on board, two actors with Asian origins, two female directors got nominated. Another untraditional thing was that the ‘Best picture’ award was given out before the ‘Best actor’ and ‘Best actress’.
With eight trophies to its credit, Netflix absolutely owned the show, followed by Disney, who secured five trophies. The Union Station set was like that of a movie. It was rather enlivening to look at faces without masks, however, it is told that off-camera masks were mandatory.
Ultimately, it was Anthony Hopkins’ performance in “The Father,” that clinched the ‘Best Actor’ trophy. In the best female actor category, the winner was Frances McDormand. The best film winner was Nomadland.
On accepting the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award during the 93rd annual Academy Awards, Tyler Perry remarked, “My mother taught me to refuse hate.”
“She taught me to refuse blanket judgments,” he said. “And in this time, and with all of the internet and social media and algorithms and everything that wants us to think a certain way, the 24-hour news cycle, it is my hope that all of us will teach our kids … just refuse hate.”
“Don’t hate anybody,” Perry added. “I refuse to hate someone because they are Mexican or because they are Black or white or LGBTQ. I refuse to hate someone because they are a police officer. I refuse to hate someone because they are Asian. I would hope that we would refuse hate.”
In the end, he dedicated his award to “anyone who wants to stand in the middle, no matter what’s around the walls, to stand in the middle because that’s where healing happens, that’s where conversation happens, that’s where change happens.”
In the Best film editing category, the winner was “Sound of Metal”.
The best cinematography and production design were all won by Mank. For the visual effects, the winner was Tenet. The best actress in a supporting role was won by Yuh-Jung Young. The best documentary feature was “My Octopus Teacher”.
Chloe Zhao, who directed “Nomadland” became the first woman of color and also the second woman to win the best directing awards in nearly 100 years.
“This is for anyone who has the faith and courage to hold onto the goodness in themselves,” she said during her acceptance speech.
