The White House says $15 billion in payments have been sent out to the families of nearly 60 million children. This plan is eligible only for this year.

For every child under the age of 6, families will get up to $3,600 under the expansion, or $300 per month. For every child between 6-17, families will get $3,000, or $250 per month. Credit last year was $2,000 per child, ages 0-16.
The amount is for families having income above $150,000 for married couples filing jointly, or $112,500 for single parents who file as head of household. Half of the credit will be disbursed over six months, with a payment made on or around the 15th of every month from now until December.
The American Families Plan is Biden administration’s most ambitious project which aims to provide universal preschool to all 3 and 4 year olds, as well as two years of free community college.

The plan also aims to ensure that low and middle income families are not bound to pay more than 7 percent of their incomes on things like child care. This step would lead to an entire wipe out of the cost for some of the poorest Americans.

Earlier on Monday, Biden spoke at the Tidewater Community College in Norfolk, Virginia, to promote his plans regarding the American Families Plan, which will offer, $109 billion for two years of tuition-free community college.

The American Families Plan is one of the Biden administration’s most ambitious projects which aims to provide universal preschool to all 3 and 4-year-olds, as well as two years of free community college. Both the programs would be available to the citizens irrespective of income.

Biden promoted and talked in-depth about the American Families Plan highlighting his own financial struggles as a single father even when he was a Senate member due to overly expensive childcare.

As described by former United States Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice in a tweet by Biden a few days back, “The American Families Plan is a once in a lifetime $1.8 trillion dollar investment into American families and children.”

A key part of this plan is as he mentioned that even though the wealthiest would be paying their share which they weren’t earlier estimated from $40 billion from 50 industrial giants, this would not result in any deficit and would rather cut the child poverty in half by the year 2025 and those earning any less than $400,000 would not see any changes in their taxes.

Ambitious about strengthening the middle class of the country through steady employment, free preschool education to children aged 3-4, and free community college, Biden discussed the significant components of the plan that would come into action and the importance of considering the nation as one for its growth and education and making it compete better and stronger in the face of other developed competitors.

Biden’s tweet comes after he highlighted his American Families Plan during the session on Wednesday, which largely talks about raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans. Through this plan, Biden wants to fund education, child care, paid leave, and other reforms by gathering more tax revenue from Americans whose income is more than $400,000 a year.

During the session, Biden emphasized that people earning less than $400,000 wouldn’t pay more in taxes; he added that it was time for companies and the wealthiest Americans to “pay their fair share.”

Biden’s $400,000 income target has been a subject of various debates as details of his tax plan emerge.

Democrats on the Capitol are pressuring President Biden to include prescription drugs and extend Medicare in his upcoming American Families Plan. This comes after the White House had signalled earlier that it won’t include major health care policy reforms.

17 senators led by Senate Budget Chairman Bernie Sander, I-Vt., through a letter pressured Biden to include Medicare in his “American Families Plan”, the second part of ‘Build Better’ agenda, which he is expected to roll out in a speech on Wednesday to Congress.

I sent a letter with 16 of my colleagues today asking President Biden to propose in his American Families Plan the most significant expansion of Medicare since it was signed into law to improve the lives of millions of Americans. pic.twitter.com/SgS5XQOsPi

— Sen. Bernie Sanders (@SenSanders) April 25, 2021

The American Families Plan is expected to invest in child care, paid family leave and education, paid for by a combination of tax increases on high-income earners. The White House describes the plan as an investment in “human infrastructure”.

Jen Psaki, White House press secretary, stated on Friday, “He will definitely talk in his speech about his commitment to expanding and increasing access to health care.” She also hinted towards the actions already undertaken by the president in his COVID-19 rescue plan to extend the Affordable Care Act Subsidy.

American Families Plan “will not represent the totality of every priority item for him and every item on his agenda that he wants to move forward with as a president,” she added.

The Washington Post reported that the American Families Plan, which is still not solid enough, will come in at around $1.8 trillion, including $300 billion for education, $225 for paid family and medical leaves, $225 for child care, and $200 billion for pre-kindergarten preparation.

The Post also reported that it will include $200 billion to extend more health insurance subsidies through ACA. This would mean that the plan does include health care but not at the scale which the progressives are demanding.

Sanders along with Democrats senators on Sunday asked the president to extend the benefits of Medicare by including hearing, dental, and vision care and also to reduce the Medicare eligibility age, which is currently at 65.

“As you know, Medicare has been one of the most successful and popular federal programs in our nation’s history since it was signed into the law by President Lyndon Johnson, in 1965,” the letter from the senators read. “Now, 55 years later, the time is long overdue for us to expand and improve this program so that millions of old Americans can receive the health care they need, including eyeglasses, hearing aid and dental care.”

Democrats including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have pushed Biden to include permanent child tax credit in his $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan.

Combined, Biden’s American Jobs Plans and American Families Plan would cost around $4 trillion. The president has suggested an increase in the corporate tax rate to pay for the former and it is expected of him to hike the capital gain tax for the latter. The White House has assured that any families earning less than $400,000 would pay any more taxes under the plan.
