President Biden to nominate an Uber executive into Justice Department
The White House on Wednesday said in a statement that President Joe Biden will nominate Matt Olsen, chief trust and security officer and a veteran of Washington’s national security circles at Uber Technologies Inc, to serve as head of the Justice Department’s national security division.
Even though The White House, Uber, and Mr. Olsen haven’t directly responded to the message seeking comment on the matter till last week if confirmed by the Senate, Mr. Olsen would be replacing John Demers, a former Boeing Co. vice president, and assistant general counsel and one of the few remaining Trump appointees still in office.
The National Security Division under John Demers, the assistant attorney general of the division played a key role in the Trump administration’s approach to China. Lawmakers across the political spectrum have supported aspects of the Justice Department’s aggressive approach towards China as it had brought a series of indictments. Here, prosecutors described in detail allegations of Beijing’s cybertheft of valuable intellectual property and defense technology from high-tech companies and contractors, aggression, and other forms of espionage. However, others haven’t been so supportive regarding the same.
Even though division’s interrogation on researchers in the U.S. accused of hiding their ties to the Chinese government, for example, has prompted some critics to argue it is driving talent away from the U.S., security officials in the Biden administration have said they would continue using elements of Mr. Trump’s approach in developing their own stance toward China by getting involved in a new task force aimed to curb and combat the proliferation of ransomware cyber-attacks.
