Rolls-Royce partners with Shell to develop sustainable aviation fuel
Rolls-Royce has announced a partnership with oil company Shell to collaborate on the development of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in an attempt to meet their goals for net-zero emissions by 2050.
A memorandum of understanding 9MoU) was signed between the two companies on Wednesday. The British engineering company has said that this step will aid their plans to certify 100% SAF for use in planes.
In the aviation sector, its biggest business area, Rolls-Royce plans all its commercial engines compatible to run on 100% SAF, which comparatively produces 70% less carbon than conventional fuel, by 2023.
The true challenge for SAFs is the shortage in supply, which will potentially be solved by the Shell partnership. According to Rolls-Royce Chief Technology Officer Paul Stein, the collective aim of the two companies is to decarbonize the process of flying.
“We believe that working together on these aims can deliver benefits for both the development of new innovations as well as collaborating to find ways to unlock the net carbon emissions reduction potential of technology that is already in use today,” he said.
