The best masks to offer protection against the Delta variant of COVID-19

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that the highly contagious Delta variant is the major cause of more than 80% of cases and is considered to be more infectious in comparison to other strains of the virus. Taking this information into account, there is a need to know about the best masks to protect against the Delta variant of the COVID-19.

Dr. Scott Gottlieb, a former commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), stated in an interview with CBS that even though the vaccines have proven effective in offering protection against the Delta variant, an additional measure of safety that includes masks is suggested.

Gottlieb specified that although the Delta variant has proven to be more infectious, there are no signs of it permeating through a good mask.

“I think that if you are going to consider wearing a mask, quality is important. So if you can get a KN95 mask or N95 mask. That will give you much more protection, “he said.

The CDC stated that the Delta variant is the most contagious variant of the virus to date, making authorities in places like Austin, Texa, and Los Angeles, California urge people to continue using masks after vaccinations as well. The onset of the pandemic saw authorities requesting individuals not to buy N95 masks as they were needed by medical personnel, but now there is an adequate supply for the material.

He further explained that fully vaccinated people can get infected, although the majority of the cases will have people experiencing the milder disease. Even so, infected people can transmit the virus: “Viral levels are highest early in the course of infection. Then, if you are surrounded by vulnerable people if you are caring for a newborn or an elderly patient and you are vaccinated, but you are not feeling well, you should probably get a checkup, do not assume that you are immune to any type of infection, even if you are vaccinated, “he clarified.
