The Great is a black comedy-drama television show with historical overtones that is largely based on Catherine the Great’s ascent to power as Empress of All Russia. On May 15, 2020, Hulu made available all ten of the first season’s episodes. Nicholas Hoult plays Emperor Peter III in the show, while Elle Fanning plays Empress Catherine II. Australian playwright and screenwriter Tony McNamara wrote much of the script for The Great, which is based on his 2008 play of the same name. Hulu referred to the series as “anti-historical” since it does not strive for historical truth.
