At a very young age, Robert Downey Jr. was introduced to drugs by his own father. His father Robert Downey Sr., was an actor and filmmaker. His father was a drug addict, allowed his son to have marijuana at an age of six. Later he claimed that drug use became an emotional bond between him and his father.
Robert Downey Jr. in 1999 was arrested by police, on account of wandering into neighbor’s house and passing out in bed. He was sentenced to 3 year prison but ended up spending only a year in jail of California.
Downey Jr. in 2001, was again arrested by police under suspicion of being under influence. His was found barefoot, wandering around Culver city. This incident led to him being fired from his role on the TV show “Ally McBeal”, in addition to other films and theatres. He was sent to rehab instead of jail.
Deborah Falconer, first wife of Robert Downey Jr., divorced the actor and left him away with their son. They separated because the actor was often sent to either rehab centre or jail. In 2001, when Downey was in jail, Falconer left Downey along with their son. She later filed divorce on April 26, 2004.
In 2008, his stepmother Rosemary told in a magazine “Bad to worse”, that Downey has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a few years ago, and considered his this disorder, a reason behind all his troubles.
