Top Democrat speaks to Biden staff about Session 230

U.S Senator Mark Warner on Monday informed that he has been talking to President Joe Biden‘s staff about Session 230- a law that protects tech companies – and expects his recent legislation to reform the law to find a Republican co-sponsor.

Section 230 protects tech platforms from liability over content users post however the reformation in the bill would make U.S social media companies like Alphabet Inc’s Google, Twitter Inc, and Facebook Inc accountable for allegedly enabling cyber-stalking targeted harassment and discrimination on their platforms by amending the session.

In February, a bill called the Safe Tech Act was introduced by Warner, who chairs the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee along with Democratic Senators Amy Klobuchar and Mazie Hirono.

“I have a hope and expectation that our legislation will shortly become bipartisan,” Warner said. He made his comments on a public panel hosted by tech publication Protocol without giving away many details.

Warner also said the administration is interested in having a debate on Section 230 after he spoke with Biden’s staff. Warner added that the White House is still developing its broader position on technology policy.

In the campaign, Biden said he supports revoking Section 230. His staff has since indicated he is eager to hear different arguments on the topic.

There are several pieces of legislation from Democrats to reform Section 230 that are doing the rounds in Congress. Several Republican lawmakers separately support this move and want to scrap the law entirely.

The chief executives of Google, Twitter, and Facebook have previously said the law is a hindrance to free speech on the internet.
