Transphobic Tennessee bill that warrants special signs for powder rooms criticised

A bill signed by Governor Bill Lee on Monday makes it mandatory for bathrooms, locker rooms, and changing rooms that allow transgender people to use them on the basis of the gender they associate themselves with to put up a sign that says so. The law will be put into effect by July 1, 2021.

Many LGBTQ+ groups have openly criticized the bill for its transphobic nature, one of them claimed the mandate to be ‘offensive and humiliating’. The bill is not the only time the Governor has displayed his prejudice- earlier this year, he signed a proposal that prohibits transgender athletes from participating in girls’ public middle and high schools.
