2 dead and 8 injured in Virginia Beach oceanfront shootings
Two people died and eight people were wounded in a shooting along Virginia Beach’s oceanfront during a chaotic night on Saturday.
Virginia Beach Police Department said,” Officers patrolling the resort area heard multiple gunshots around 11.20 p.m.Friday.”
All eight people were taken to local hospitals, with some of their conditions ranging from serious to life-threatening. One woman died of a gunshot wound on the scene.
The second shooting happened as officers were investigating the initial scene. Shots rang out nearby, and an officer confronted a suspect and fatally shot him, police officer Chief Paul Neudigate said. The officer confronted the man, leading to deadly gunfire.
The officer has been placed on administrative leave. He has been with the department for five years and is assigned to its special operation division.
The original shooting and the officer shooting were being investigated concurrently.
”We have a very chaotic incident, a very chaotic night,” Neudigate said.
No suspect information was immediately available. Newdigate said several people were in police custody but their possible involvement in the shooting was still under investigation.
Multiple roads were blocked off throughout the night while police worked in the area.
