Following a lengthy standoff in North Carolina, two deputies and three others including a suspected gunman were found to be dead, as per Sheriff’s office on Thursday.

Sgt. Chris Ward and K-9 Deputy Logan Fox have dispatched a home in Boone at 9:44 a.m. Wednesday, as the homeowner and his family didn’t show up at work or answer any telephone calls, as said by Watauga County Sheriff office.

Both the officers were hit by gunfire. Officers were able to pull out Ward, who died later at the hospital, but Fox died at the scene.

“The individual suspected of killing the two officers is also suspected of killing two civilians in the residence. The names of the civilians are not being released at this time,” the statement said.

One of the Boone officers was also hit by a bullet during an attempt to rescue the deputies, but thanks to his protective equipment, he remained uninjured, as per the statement.

Sheriff Len Hagaman stated in a statement that “This is an incredibly tragic situation and out-thought and prayers are with everyone involved as well as their families and our community.”

Approximately 15 law enforcement agencies surrounded the residence. People living nearby were either evacuate or told to shelter as the standoff lasted through the day and Wednesday night, as per sheriff’s office reports.
