Lena police shot an armed suspect for attempted bank robbery

Police shot an armed suspect in Lena after a possible attempted bank robbery on Friday morning.

According to the Lena Police Department, officers responded to Citizens State Bank, 102 W Main St, after a report of an armed man in the bank.

A man entered the bank with a firearm. According to Stephenson County Sheriff Chief Deputy Steve Stovall, the arriving officers saw the suspect exit the bank and go to a car nearby, fired a round into the air when he saw officers. A crisis negotiator was reported on the scene along with Stephenson County Sheriffs and Lena Police.

Stovall said that the suspect engaged with police in a standoff for two hours and raised his weapon in the direction of officers, police fired him.

The suspect was taken to Freeport Memorial Hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound.

Downtown Lena businesses were closed and the Lena-Winslow Schools District was placed on soft lockdown during the incident.

At present, no injuries have been reported. Streets were shut down and drivers were asked to avoid the area.
