FedEx gunman shot at random before dying by suicide; Suspect yet to be identified

Police seeking a motive for the FedEx shooting on Thursday came up empty while still working to identify the gunman and the eight victims on Friday.

Police responded to a report just after 11 p.m. Thursday at the FedEx Ground facility on the city’s southwest side of shots fired. Police encountered an active crime scene after a gunman fired at random both inside and outside the facility

At a news conference on Friday, Indianapolis Deputy Police Chief Craig McCartt said that the suspect appeared to have died by suicide moments before police arrived. While police have an idea of who the gunman was and are searching his house, McCartt said police were not able to formally identify him yet.

The victims of the tragedy include four people who died outside and four who died inside, in addition to the shooter. Five people were also injured in the incident, four with gunshot wounds and one with another injury.

The coroner’s office is yet to get onto the scene to identify the victims and inform family members as police are still collecting evidence at the scene, said Alfarena McGinty, chief deputy coroner for Marion County.

The tragedy is one of the many that have devastated the United States in the past month. Incidents include the mass shootings at spas in Atlanta and a grocery store in Colorado, instigating a debate on U.S. gun violence.
