End of Castro era in Cuba: Raul Castro resigns from Communist Party

Raul Castro, in a statement on Friday, said that he is resigning as the head of Cuba’s Communist Party.

The announcement was made on Friday in a speech at the opening of the Eighth Congress of the ruling party, the only one allowed on the island.

Ending an era of formal leadership by Raul and his brother Fidel Castro that began with the 1959 revolution, Castro has not mentioned who he would endorse as his successor as the first secretary-general of the Communist Party.

He had, however, previously indicated that he favours yielding control to Miguel Diaz-Canel, who succeeded him as president in 2018.
