Ohio Police shots a teen girl after being informed about an armed person
A police officer in Columbus, Ohio shots a teen girl, after responding to a call about someone armed with a knife. The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon.
Part of the police officer’s body camera footage showed the girl attempting to stab another girl before the gunfire.
Following the shooting, there appears to be a knife on the ground by the person who was shot.
As per the police, the video showed someone attempting to stab a person.
City officials termed the shooting as a tragedy and urged the people to stay calm patient, while the mayor termed the whole incident as a “horrible, heartbreaking situation”.
The girl shot was 16-year-old, Ma’Khia Bryant, Franklin County Children service said on Tuesday night.
The shooting happened just before the nation learned the verdict of George Floyd’s case wherein the police office Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all three charges.
The police officers dispatched around 4:30 after a “caller says females were there trying to stab them and put their hands on them,” as per Columbus Interim Police Chief, Michael Woods.
Body-camera video shows a fight when police arrives at the location. Two girls were in confrontation and one falls to ground in front of the officer.
The officer apparently had repeated the words “get down” before firing the shot and as per her, the girl went “at her”.
Woods said that he found it quite unusual to release the body-cam footage but he wanted to maintain transparency in the event. The officer, who has yet publicly identified, will be taken off street-duty, said Woods.
The Bureau of Criminal Investigation is conducting an investigation into the shooting.
