Anthony Alvarez shooting: Chicago Police releases new body-cam footage

Chicago police have released a new bodycam footage which shows the officer critically shooting the 22-year-old man, who was allegedly carrying a gun while running away from the police late last month.

On Wednesday, Chicago’s Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) released dozens of police and third-party videos related to the March 31 shooting of Anthony Alvarez, along with the audio call to 911.

Video shows a firearm just feet away from where Alvarez fell from the shooting. The police officer had ordered him twice to “drop the gun” before allegedly firing five rounds. Alvarez appears to be running away from him at that time.

Alvarez can be heard questioning the police, “Why are you shooting me?” The officer replied with “you had a gun,” as the video shows.

Chicago police also posted a video compilation of the shooting.

COPA on Wednesday stated that a team of tactical officers from the Chicago Police Department tried to “stop and speak” with Alvarez in the early morning hours of the Portage Park. He fled as the officers approached him.

Police in a previous statement stated that Alvarez, father of a 2-year-old, allegedly displayed a gun, which led to his confrontation with the police.

Authorities have also posted pictures of a weapon on social media, which according to them was found at the scene.

As per an autopsy report from the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, it suggested that Alvarez died due to multiple gunshots.

Police Superintendent, David Brown, at a press conference, said that the officer who fired the shot had been placed on routine administrative leave for 30 days.
