Michigan Governor to notify lawmakers when leaving state, according to new bill

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer would need to notify legislative leaders when going out of the state is a new GOP bill.

A Republican lawmaker proposed a bill on Wednesday that requires Governor Gretchen Whitmer and future governors to apprise legislative leaders when leaving Michigan.

The bill, proposed by Senator Tom Barrett, R-Charlotte, comes in the wake of controversy surrounding Whitmer over a trip to Florida to visit her ailing father.

The trip was criticized by Republicans, arguing it was hypocritical as it came amid the state’s travel advice during a pandemic, and asked Whitmer to reveal more details about her travel.

Under the bill, the governor would need to inform the Senate majority and minority leaders, including the House speaker and House minority leader. The notification must be in writing, informing the expected length of the trip and shall also tell who will work as acting governor.
