Juneteenth to become a Federal Holiday; Inordinate support from both Congress chambers
Back in 1865, on June 19, Texas became the last state to strike-off slavery and brand it illegal. Around 250,000 slaves were liberated on the day by the US Army. Recognising the importance of the day, Juneteenth that falls on June 19 every year is sacredly celebrated. The House and Senate passed the Bill, it had tremendous support from the members of both chambers.
“Our federal holidays are purposely few in number and recognize the most important milestones. I cannot think of a more important milestone to commemorate than the end of slavery in the United States,” said Carolyn Maloney, Representative, New York.
Today @POTUS will sign the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, establishing June 19th as a federal holiday. As the 19th falls on a Saturday, most federal employees will observe the holiday tomorrow, June 18th.
