Airstrike by U.S. on Iran-backed militias complicates nuclear talks

U.S. airstrikes on Iran-backed militias in Iraq and Syria not only depicted Biden’s response but also shrugged off the oil market. With the expiration of a nuclear monitoring pact between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency last week, the risk further increased. Though Iran hasn’t yet decided its next step regarding the deal, various diplomats and foreign officials stressed upon renewal of the deal.

“The raids on operational and weapons storage facilities came in response to attacks on U.S. interests and were a necessary, appropriate, and deliberate action designed to limit the risk of escalation,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Monday.
