GOP trench reopens Trump’s impeachment trial after he is acquitted
GOP house members nearly refused liberation of Donald Trump in impeachment second trial hours before Senate Republican’s acquitted him of the case.
In the statement by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, .Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Wash who supported impeachment were reinforced by democrats demanding to call witnesses. Senate Republicans had to beat back last-minute .R-Calif., told her Trump had dismissed pleas for help as his supporters plundered the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.
Though the call for witnesses failed, Herrera Beutler was targeted by Trump supporters in no time with their tweets.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga. a fierce trump loyalist tweeted “The gift that keeps on giving to the Democrats The Trump loyal 75 million are watching.”
A 57-43 majority of the Senate voted to convict Trump but fell short of the two-thirds majority required for conviction. Seven Republicans joined the 50 Democrats – more than expected.
The back and forth underscored the internal battle among Republicans, between those who want to continue following Trump and those who believe the party needs to move beyond a disgraced ex-president to win elections in the future.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky gave a searing statement on the Senate floor voting against conviction saying Trump is “practically and morally responsible” for the Jan. 6 riot.
“Tribalism is a hell of a drug, but our oath to the Constitution means we’re constrained to the facts,” Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., said. In a statement after the acquittal, Trump was undeterred, saying his movement “has only just begun”
