Myanmar Protest: Police becomes violent with protesters in Mandalay, 2 dead
The Mandalay police on Saturday open fired on the protestors in Myanmar, leaving two dead.
The country has been in open revolt since the army deposed Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi’s government at the start of the month and changed her under obscure import law.
The sources to media confirmed the use of tear gases to disperse the crowd at an anti-coup protest.
Two different volunteer emergency workers are confirming the two dead to agencies.
“Twenty people were injured and two are dead,” said Ko Aung, a leader of the Parahita Darhi volunteer emergency service told media.
“Two people were killed and about 30 others injured, AFP reported, citing Hlaing Min Oo, the head of a Mandalay-based volunteer emergency rescue team. “Half of the injured were shot with live rounds,” he told.
A young woman died on Friday after a fatal shot to the head during the anti-coup protests last week. She was the first known casualty of the pro-democracy protests that have been ongoing for two weeks, following the military’s seizure of power on February 1.
UN special rapporteur Tom Andrews warned that soldiers going into, as had been reported, could lead to the situation spiraling out of control.” We could be on the precipice of the military committing even greater crimes against the people of Myanmar” he said.
