Navalny’s poisoning case triggered sanctions on Russia by US and EU

Russia accused of attempting to kill opposition figure Alexei Navalny, President Vladimir Putin’s most high-profile political foe. It dispensed the country individuals into big trouble as the United States and European Union imposed sanctions on Tuesday reciprocating on the issue.

“The intelligence community assesses with high confidence that officers of Russia’s Federal Security Service FSB used a nerve agent known as Novichok to poison Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny on August 20, 2020,” According to a release by a trusted media source, a senior U.S. official said.

In a conversation with reporters, officials said the process was under the tutelage of the European Union. EU headquarters said the four were listed including head of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, Igor Krasnov, the prosecutor general, Viktor Zolotov, chief of the National Guard, and Alexander Kalashnikov, chief of the National Guard, and Alexander Kalashnikov, “over their roles in the arbitrary arrest, prosecution, and sentencing of Alexei Navalny, as well as the repression of peaceful protests in connection with his unlawful treatment,” as The Associated Press (AP) reported.

Navalny’s arrest and imprisonment have waged protests across Russia. Authorities detained about 11,000 people, many of whom were fined or shut behind bars from 7 to 15 days. EU implemented sanctions initially under a new system to restrict people and organizations deemed responsible for human rights abuses.

The Biden administration also announced sanctions for 14 businesses and another enterprise, most of which were involved in the production of biological and chemical agents.

The sanction on Tuesday would be among the first of plural steps by the Biden administration to “respond to several destabilizing actions” said one of the administration officials, who briefed reporters conditioning they not be identified further.
