After Florida Condo Collapse, wave of fundraising and donation scams emerges

After the deadly Florida Condo Collapse, a wave of fundraising and donation scams emerges. 16 declared dead and 147 unaccounted for now. Legit fundraising through the supportsurfside.org website has brought in nearly $2 million.

County officials say that some scammers are capitalizing on the tragedy through fake fundraising and donation pages.

“I would like to thank everyone who has generously continued to support the relief efforts from the contributions that you are making. They are welcomed and greatly received. There have, unfortunately, been some people trying to take advantage of fraudulent GoFundMe accounts. What we can do is to assure you that you are properly submitting funds or donating through the appropriate agencies. We express that you go to www.miamidade.gov/emergency.” Charles Cyrille, director of the Miami-Dade Office of Emergency Management, said during a press briefing Wednesday.
