Biden administration shuts down two detention centers after allegations of abuse
The Biden administration ordered Immigration and Customs Enforcement to close two detention centers in Georgia and Massachusetts following accusations of abuse at both facilities.
The Department of Homeland Security is shutting down the C. Carlos Carreiro Immigration Detention Center in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts, and is ending an intergovernmental service agreement with the Bristol County Sheriff’s Office.
DHS is also planning to stop the use of the Irwin County Detention Center in Ocilla, Georgia, as soon as possible.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas cofirmed in a statement, “this marks an important first step” in making “lasting improvements to our civil immigration detention system.”
“DHS detention facilities and the treatment of individuals in those facilities will be held to our health and safety standards. Where we discover they fall short, we will continue to take action as we are doing today,” he added.
