Bill on Personal data to be voted in New York state Senate
The New York State Senate is going to vote on a bill that would provide consumers more control over their personal data.
The New York Privacy Act would ask businesses to acquire written consent from New Yorkers before availing or transferring their personal data to a third party.
State Senator Kevin Thomas, the sponsor of the bill in the Senate, stated that there is no rationale behind these companies being able to hold on to people’s information forever.
Thomas added, “If you are typing in your name, your address, your phone number on a website for one purpose, they shouldn’t be now sending that information to a third party, which has nothing to do with that site, other than to collect money off of you for giving them that that information,”.
The New York Privacy Act would give someone the choice if they want to sell their information, fix wrong private information on the internet, control over where their information is going and provide consumers the right to ask their personal data be removed.
