Clayton County Sheriff accused of abusing civil rights of detainees

Clayton County Sheriff, Victor Hill, has been accused of allegedly abusing the civil rights of detainees in Clayton County jail, by a federal grand jury.

Hill faces several charges against him, one of which is that he ordered his employees to use excessive force at the jail last year.

On Tuesday, Hill released a statement responding to the allegations.

Hill in his statement stated, “Today I will begin the process of fighting a politically motivated federal legal case,” he further added, “My legal teams are the only ones authorized to speak on the details of this matter, and they are confident about the facts of this case.”

Reports say that Hill came under the radar of the federal investigation for an allegation of excessive force at the jail, shortly after he was elected to his fourth term.

Elected in 2005, Hill became the first African-American sheriff of Clayton County. He served as a sheriff for the non-consecutive period from 2005 to 2008, followed by his current run beginning in 2013.

In the past, Hill was accused by the grand jury in Gwinnett County of shooting in 2015. He claimed that he was practicing police tactics when he shot her. He was further sentenced to 12-month probation and a $1,000 fine as he entered the plea of No Contest. Also, the woman who shot spoke in favor of Hill.
