Defeat in the first round of regional elections, setback for Marine Le Pen
Marine Le Pen, the far-right leader, had hoped to take top seats in three regional councils but to her surprise, the exit poll portrays a mere 19% of total votes in her favour which is 8% less than the number of 2015 votes. The reason for its failure can be considered the backlash against politics in general. Xavier Bertrand won with 41% of the seats which might be considered as a really tough competition for the Presidential election.
Things might change in the long term but presently, things seem vague as far as presidential elections are concerned at least till June 27, when the second round of voting will take place.
“National Rally voters are loyal, they don’t switch parties, but when they are unhappy, they just don’t turn up,” Le Pen said. She even mentioned that most of her supporters stayed home and didn’t turn up for the regional election.
