Engineers had warned against damage, days before Miami condo collapse
A 12-story residential building had collapsed north of Miami Beach on Thursday around 1:30 am. New reports indicate that engineers had warned against ‘exponential damage’ to the building due to flaws in design and failure in waterproofing, about 990 days before the collapse.
Surfside, Florida, released the documents that included an unverified inspection report that arrived 16 hours after the building’s collapse. Although none of the documents foresaw a potential collapse, they had revealed multiple threats to the building’s structure. One report had even indicated a problem at the bottom of the building.
Although the problems were published in reports as long as three years ago, no substantial action had been taken to resolve the underlying issues.
Champlain Tower reports range from a few pages long up to more than 300 pages. The reports highlight a wide range of issues and suggestions for the building and its residents.
