Fulton Vs Philadelphia; Ruling in favour of the Catholic Social Services, against Gay Rights

Catholic Social Services was exempted from the contract with the State for the provision of foster care services because the organisation refuses same-sex couples to adopt children under their care citing their religious beliefs. CSS took their case to the Supreme Court where they won. The judgment is a major setback for the Gay Rights Movement and has been met with a lot of criticisms.

In his statement, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. said that- “CSS seeks only an accommodation that will allow it to continue serving the children of Philadelphia in a manner consistent with its religious beliefs; it does not seek to impose those beliefs on anyone else…We have never suggested that the government may discriminate against religion when acting in its managerial role.”
