Historic M&M Store in Uptown Butte engulfed in fire
The historic M&M Cigar Store in Uptown Butte Fire caught fire and was demolished in the early Friday morning. The fire destroyed the roof and left the rest of the building burnt and gutted. However, nobody was injured but the building was at a complete loss
Around 3 A.M. the Firefighters reached the bar and grill at 9 North Main St. It is told that 12-foot flames were coming from the roof.
It took almost two hours to control the fire and even two hours after that, crews were on the scene.
Jim Merrifield, a battalion chief with the Butte-Silver Bow Fire Department said, “There was smoke in every orifice of the building. The fire was on the roof and spread throughout the building through the ductwork.”
Around 30 firefighters reverted back and at about 6:30 AM, two firefighters worked on a ladder truck moving about in a bucket detecting the damage.
Merrifield stated, “It’s a total loss. No question.” He added that he was not aware of how the fire got started but said that firefighters would likely stay on the scene for a few more hours.
The M&M is one of Butte’s most historic memorials. It was started by Sam Martin and William Mosby in 1890.
