House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announces a special committee to investigate Capitol insurrection

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that a select committee will be set up to investigate the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6.

Describing it as a “day of darkness”, Pelosi said, “It is imperative we seek the truth about what happened.”

Pelosi, who wanted to set up a bipartisan committee declared that she had set up the select committee “with great solemnity and sadness”. A bipartisan commission had been proposed to investigate the Capitol insurrection. Although it passed the House last month, the Senate Republicans blocked it.

January 6 saw the Capitol building stormed by pro-Trump supporters as members of the Congress gathered to count the Electoral College votes declaring Joe Biden’s victory in the elections.

Members of the Congress including Pelosi were forced to go into hiding following the attack.
