Joe Biden to unveil multi-trillion-dollar infrastructure plan next week

U.S. President Joe Biden will travel to Pittsburgh next week, the place where he kicked off his presidential campaign in 2019, to uncover a multi-trillion-dollar plan to rebuild America’s infrastructure, choosing a backdrop of an American city with a long union history.

Biden is expected to push for a “Build Back Better” plan that could have a price tag worth $4 trillion to pay for traditional roads and bridges at the same time also tackling climate change and domestic policy issues like income equality.

On March 31, Biden is expected to travel to the Western Pennsylvania city, the White House said on Wednesday. Pittsburgh is a blue-collar city that is home to a long Biden ally, the United Steel Workers union.

The legislative effort is foreseen to be split into two parts, a first package that deals with traditional transportation projects and a second one that addresses domestic priorities, such as universal prekindergarten, national childcare, and free community college tuition.

Biden indicated during the campaign trail that he would pay for the package in part by revoking President Donald Trump’s tax cuts for high-income earners. Congressional Republicans have already signaled that the plan may be opposed by them due to the expected tax increases and Democrats using the effort to impose sweeping policy changes.

Sometime this week, Biden may give a brief on the plan and White House officials said the final details remain fluid.

“He is considering a range of options, scopes, and sizes of plans and will discuss with his policy team in days ahead, but speculation is premature,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki Tweeted on Monday.
