After the accident took place, the authorities stopped rescue efforts shortly after they began, stating there was a risk of more train parts and debris crashing down over the road.
Mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum stated that 49 people out of the injured were hospitalized, and over seven were in severe condition and undergoing surgery.
However, talking about the cause of the accident, Sheinbaum said, “The cause of the collapse of the beam must be established through an expert investigation.”
The train collapse is being termed as one of the deadliest episodes in the history of Mexico City’s subway system, which is among the world’s busiest.
