Lisa Monaco approved to serve as deputy attorney general by U.S. Senate panel
The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday overwhelmingly approved Lisa Monaco, President Joe Biden’s nominee to serve as deputy attorney general by a voice vote, making an opportunity for her to receive a confirmation vote on the Senate floor.
However, Republicans also signaled that they would not be willing to support Vanita Gupta who is Biden’s associate attorney general nominee.
Ranking Republican Charles Grassley said on Thursday said that Gupta’s public record is too extreme and her testimony hasn’t helped him contextualize it in any meaningful way.
Monaco was called a “consummate professional” by Grassley.
Before the panel proceeds to vote on her nomination, Gupta’s record debate is expected to continue.
