Michigan gov. apologizes after violating COVID-19 social distancing protocols
Michigan’s Democratic governor issued a public apology on Sunday as she took the biggest pandemic-related misstep by violating social distancing guidelines. It was reported that Whitmer was seen with a large group of unmasked people in a restaurant and bar in East Lansing which made the governor comment, “Throughout the pandemic, I’ve been committed to following public health protocols. Yesterday, I went with friends to a local restaurant. As more people arrived, the tables were pushed together. Because we were all vaccinated, we didn’t stop to think about it. In retrospect, I should have thought about it. I am human. I made a mistake, and I apologize.”
The photo of Whitmer squeezed together with more than a dozen people got highly circulated even though due to increasing coronavirus cases in the state, Michigan restaurants and bars were supposed to follow capacity limits and social distancing requirements. The current orders require six people or fewer at tables and distances of 6 feet (1.83 meters) between tables. As Whitmer issued a statement on Sunday for the criticized mistake, the photo was deleted from all social media sites.
Whitmer had visited Florida to visit her father and was reluctant towards disclosing details regarding her private jet trip because the residents of Michigan were warned and cautioned towards traveling during these times. She is fully vaccinated with two shots but is still expected to adhere to the pandemic guidelines.
