President Biden to announce extended deadline for withdrawing U.S. troops from Afghanistan

President Biden will pull-back American troops from Afghanistan, people acquainted with his plans said, the military exit will complete by the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, popular known as 9/11 attacks.

Earlier the deadline to withdraw the troops was set on May 1st which was negotiated by Trump administration. President Biden is likely to make announcement regarding the extended deadline on Wednesday.

The Taliban sits as a threat for U.S. personnel as they are asserted to carry out attacks against the latter if they don’t exit by 1st May. It is yet not clear whether they will follow through this extended deadline’s plan and continue to halt their attacks till September.

As per official records, there are 2,500 American troops in Afghan but the numbers keep on fluctuating. There are also more than 7,000 troops who are in alliance with the U.S., majority of them are NATO troops.

As per the person familiar with the plan, who wishes to be anonymous, says that “if the May 1st deadline is not met with no clear plan for exit, we will be back at war with Taliban and that’s something President Biden believed was not in the national interest.”

The United States have failed in defeating the Taliban and establishing stable, democratic governance and have lost trillions of dollars. In addition to money, around 2,000 U.S. service members and at least 100,000 Afghan civilians have lost their lives.

Some officials believe that the Kabul government will collapse, if the U.S. exits. It will also put a threat on whatever development was made in the past two decades in health and women rights.

Biden officials have assured that the nation will stay in close relation with Afghanistan and will continue to provide aid to the country which totally dependent on foreign aids.

“What we won’t do is use our troops as bargaining chip in the process,” says the anonymous person.

As for the main reason for which went on war was to bring those to justice who were responsible for 9/11 attacks and that objective was achieved some years ago, as per the anonymous person.

On Tuesday, administration officials have been notifying the NATO officials and the Afghan government and the Taliban.

It is not clear when will the NATO forces exit from the country but they sure will coordinate their plans with that of U.S. plans. Many of those government have already said that they won’t be able to execute plan to withdraw their troops without help from The United States.

In early March, Blinken had warned Ashraf Ghani, President of Afghanistan, by a sharp worded letter that indicated on ending the war by bringing both Taliban and government together to share the power. This move was to accelerate the negotiating process which had begun under Trump in 2019, when The White House was in talks with militant leaders in Doha, Qatar’s capital.

Further ahead it led to February 2020 agreement under which U.S. pledges to withdraw forces by 1st May, in exchange for Taliban to cease-fire and peace accord.
