“Respect LGBT rights or leave the European Union”, says Dutch PM

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte told Hungary’s premier to Respect LGBT rights or leave the European Union, as EU leaders confronted Viktor Orban over a law that bans schools from using materials seen as promoting homosexuality.

French President Emmanuel Macron called it a “cultural battle”, due to increasing illiberal ideologies. Hungary may face a legal challenge at the EU’s highest court if it does not comply. This was done after Poland and Hungary’s conservative governments supported each other for a long time from the human rights values of the EU.

Orban, Hungary’s prime minister, called himself a “freedom fighter” and mentioned that law was not an attack on gay people but aimed at guaranteeing parents’ right to decide on their children’s sexual education.
