Rudy Giuliani suspended from practicing law in New York State

I1n a shocking turn of events, Rudy Giuliani was suspended from practising law in New York State, on Thursday. The suspension comes as a result of accusations against Giuliani for making “false and misleading statements” about President Donald Trump’s election loss.

Giuliani, who has formerly served as the mayor of New York City, a top official at the Justice Department, and the U.S. Attorney in Manhattan will be suspended with immediate effect. The same federal prosecutor’s office in Manhattan has subjected Giuliani to criminal investigation for alleged connections to Ukraine.

Giuliani had questioned the legitimacy of the election that declared victory for Joe Biden, alongside Donald Trump. He had claimed that Biden’s victory had only been the result of massive ballot fraud in key swing states.

Giuliani’s suspension was granted by the Appellate Division for the First Judicial Department of state Supreme Court.

The court said, “that there is uncontroverted evidence that respondent communicated demonstrably false and misleading statements to courts, lawmakers and the public at large in his capacity as lawyer for former President Donald J. Trump and the Trump campaign in connection with Trump’s failed effort at reelection in 2020.”

The court concluded that Giuliani’s conduct threatens the public interest and warrants interim suspension from the practice of law. Giuliani’s suspension is temporary and still awaits a formal disciplinary hearing.

Giuliani’s lawyers John Leventhal and Barry Kamins stated that “This is unprecedented as we believe that our client does not pose a present danger to the public interest.”
