Senator Mitch McConnell opposes formation of Capitol attack commission as house set to vote

By the time the U.S. House of Representatives anticipated to vote to accept the setting up of a commission to investigate the ghastly Capitol attack on January 6 by Donald Trump’s supporters, the Senate’s senior Republican proposed a major hurdle by declaring his opposition to the proposal, reported Reuters.

Speaking on the Senate floor, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell stated, “I have made the decision to oppose the House Democrats’ slanted and unbalanced proposal for another commission to study the events of Jan. 6.”

McConnell closed the door to further negotiations on forming an independent commission to investigate the matter, citing references of existing congressional investigations and the prior arrests of hundreds of people in relation to the riot.

“There will continue to be no shortage of robust investigations,” McConnell added.

In the equally split Senate, Republicans can stop the legislation. At least 60 votes are required to advance most bills in the 100-member Senate.
