The Kentucky’s abortion law procures hearing in the U.S. Supreme Court

On Monday, The U.S Supreme court decided to offer a hearing by Kentucky’s Republican attorney general to shield a restrictive state law long due by lower courts, directing towards abortion rights advocates would effectively ban the procedure after 15 weeks of pregnancy.

The law retains the support of Republicans while Democratic Governor Andy Beshear’s administration is against it. Hence, Attorney General Daniel Cameron solicited the justices to let him intervene in defence of the law.

The Attorney’s foresee Supreme Court to concentrate on the only issue rather than contemplating if the law breaches Supreme Court’s precedents holding that women have a right to obtain an abortion.

The supporter of law yearns that the Supreme Court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, will curb abortion rights.

According to advocates of Abortion rights, the 2018 law can ban abortion methods, dilation and evacuation, the most common form of abortion performed during the second trimester of pregnancy.

Kentucky’s legislature proffered the law the Republican governor signed it after the selection of Beshear he decided to drop the defence to measure after the Cincinnati-based 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals obstructed the procedure in June 2020. The 6th Circuit later that month declined to allow Cameron to intervene to defend the law.

After the 6th circuit ruling Supreme Court in a 5-4 decision struck down a Louisiana law that imposed restrictions on doctors who perform abortions.

Cameron wants to ask the 6th Circuit to reconsider its ruling against the Kentucky law in light of language contained in the Louisiana decision.

The Kentucky law is among the increased number of legislation passed by Republican legislators at the state level imposing several restrictions on abortion. The state’s previous governor, Republican Matt Bevin, had defended the law.
